Why the MTV Movie & TV Awards are Important
Hi Everyone,
Sunday marked the first annual MTV Movie & TV Awards. In years past, they've only covered what movies have brought to the table over the past year but this year there were so many influential television shows that there was no choice but to recognize them.
I've watched so many award shows in the past and each of them come and go without leaving an impression on me. My favorites got snubbed or someone I loved finally got the award they deserved but nothing stayed with me. This year, MTV's award show resonated with me, like no other award show had. Not only were the categories inspiring, but the nominees were diverse in sexual orientation, race, religion, and gender. They even award Emma Watson as best actor in a movie and Millie Bobby Brown as best actor in a show. What is so exciting about this is the category included men AND women, this is the first award show to not separate the genders.
MTV understood that talent is talent. Talent doesn't have a gender, race, or sexual orientation. Talent is something everyone has. A lot of award shows fall into the trap of following the status quo, only nominating the same people and giving the same people the same awards. MTV took a risk that paid off so incredibly. Hollywood doesn't utilize the amazing diverse talent of the world, they stick with what they know. MTV stepped out of the box and is beginning to create a world where everyone fits in.
I am so glad to be a part of a generation that is giving generations to come a more inclusive world. Love, talent, and inclusiveness are meant for everyone, not just a few.
